Job Summary
Join our team at Geisinger Medical Laboratories to provide high‑quality patient care through innovative laboratory services. As a Phlebotomist II, you will perform venipunctures and skin punctures on patients ranging from neonates to adults, and ensure accurate specimen collection, processing, and reporting.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups to obtain blood specimens.
- Process specimens for analysis according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
- Register patients, facilitate billing, accession laboratory specimens, and provide related information using computer systems.
- Maintain specimen quality and accuracy by evaluating suitability, identifying discrepancies, and resolving or referring issues as appropriate.
- Perform point‑of‑care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control.
- Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols.
- Follow reporting procedures—computerized, verbal, and manual—and document problems and solutions.
- Navigate multiple computer applications, including laboratory and hospital systems.
- Provide phlebotomy coverage for group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or in‑home phlebotomy for homebound patients.
- Pass initial and ongoing competency exams.
- Comply with all organization policies, procedures, and compliance requirements.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year of related work experience (Phlebotomist I or II).
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician – American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required.
- Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA), or similar roles is considered.
- Military medical experience (e.g., Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, Navy Hospital Corpsman) is considered.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to make patients feel relaxed and protected.
