Job Summary
Join our team at Geisinger Medical Laboratories. As a phlebotomist, you will collect blood and other human specimens in a clinical setting, support patient care, and work collaboratively with clinical counterparts and laboratory leaders to ensure accurate and timely specimen processing.
Job Duties
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
- Identify patients, collect, label, accession, and process specimens.
- Operate in Acute, Post‑acute, Clinic, and Field Service areas as required.
- Maintain specimen acceptability and reject when criteria are not met.
- Document specimen data and use Geisinger business applications and tools.
- Mentor students and new employees and support training for ASCP certification.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities, including root cause analyses.
- Carry out inventory management as directed by site or regional lead.
- Comply with all organizational policies, practices, and safety standards.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED (required).
- Related work experience (required).
- Certification: Certified Phlebotomy Technician – American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) (required).
- Phlebotomist level: I (< 1 year experience), II (1–2 years or Geisinger School of Phlebotomy graduate), or III (qualifications of II + ASCP certification and internal preceptor course).
- Experience as NA, CNA, MA, CMA, or similar considered.
- Military experience (Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, etc.) considered.
- Strong communication, computer literacy, interpersonal skills, and problem‑solving ability.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a clinical environment.
