Key Responsibilities
  • Collect and procure blood and human specimens in the clinical setting.
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens in accordance with Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Identify patients, label specimens, accession and process samples with accuracy.
  • Demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills and understand criteria for specimen acceptability and rejection.
  • Work effectively in a team environment and respond to leadership from Phlebotomist III, Preanalytical Specialist, Team Lead, Supervisor, or other Laboratory Leader.
  • Apply critical thinking to adjust to changing work conditions and operate independently with accountability.
  • Use Geisinger business applications and tools as an autonomous end user.
  • Collect specimens in Acute, Post‑acute, Clinic and Field Service areas as needed.
  • Mentor students and new employees.
  • Manage inventory as directed by site or regional lead.
  • Complete initial and annual competency via the Learning Management System, including exam and direct observation checklist.
  • Assist with continuous improvement objectives such as root‑cause analyses and other investigative processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all organization policies and procedures in a clinical environment.
Position Details

As a phlebotomist you will support Geisinger’s mission of providing high‑quality patient care. You will perform venipunctures/skin punctures on inpatient patients and may troubleshoot physician orders, process specimens for testing, and provide assistance to patients. Phlebotomists work at multiple skill levels (I, II, III) and opportunities exist for ASCP certification and departmental training.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) – required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related work experience – preferred.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) – preferred.
  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), or certified medical assistant (CMA) is considered.
  • Military experience is considered (e.g., 68W, 18D, Hospital Corpsman).
  • Phlebotomist I – less than 1 year of experience.
  • Phlebotomist II – 1–2 years of experience or graduate of Geisinger’s School of Phlebotomy Program.
