Job Summary

Job Duties
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
- Ensure competency in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and processing.
- Apply strong problem‑solving skills and understand criteria for specimen acceptability and rejection.
- Collaborate with clinical and non‑clinical counterparts to promote a safe environment and best outcomes.
- Work under the leadership of Phlebotomist III, Pre‑analytical Specialist, Team Lead, Supervisor, or other Laboratory Leader and escalates issues appropriately.
- Operate independently and accountably in all assigned care areas.
- Follow supplemental safety protocols at non‑Geisinger facilities.
- Use Geisinger business applications and tools as an autonomous end user.
- Carrying the mobile phlebotomy toolkit (ability to carry/lift 15 pounds).
- Collect specimens in Acute, Post‑acute, Clinic and Field Service areas as needed.
- Mentor students and new employees.
- Manage inventory as directed by site or regional lead.
- Complete initial and annual competency via Learning Management System, including an exam and direct observation checklist.
- Practice sound judgment, decision making, and collaboration for continuous improvement objectives, including root cause analyses.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean record; undergo annual driver record checks.
- Adhere to Geisinger SFP fleet maintenance policy and vehicle preventive maintenance schedules.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) – required.
- Related work experience – required.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician – American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
- Experience as a Nursing Assistant (NA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or similar considered.
- Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic Specialist (68W), Aerospace Medical Technician (4N0X1), or other medical specialty considered.
- Phlebotomist I: less than 1 year of experience.
- Phlebotomist II: 1–2 years of experience or Geisinger School of Phlebotomy graduate.
- Phlebotomist III: qualifications of Phlebotomist II plus ASCP Certification and internal preceptor course.
