Job summary

Jobtailor in North Carolina seeks a Patient Access Specialist to greet patients, register walk-ins, verify insurance, and manage financial clearance. The role supports efficient patient flow and accurate demographic and insurance data entry.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Patient access (scheduling, registration and financial clearance), insurance verification, billing or certified medical assistant experience preferred.
  • Ability to travel/float to Elkin, Mt. Airy, Statesville, and Wilkesboro.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, HIPAA, EMTALA rules and regulations, and insurance pre-certification requirements.
  • Mathematical aptitude, effective oral and written communication skills, and critical thinking skills.
  • Understanding of basic human anatomy, medical terminology, and medical procedures.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information according to internal policies.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and ADT software.
  • Ability to write routine correspondence and calculate figures, discounts, and percentages.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and determine work priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients arriving for appointments.
  • Monitor patient flow to ensure efficient and courteous care.
  • Complete and maintain accurate patient demographic and insurance information.
  • Register walk-in patients and update information as needed.
  • Verify insurance benefits and calculate and collect patient financial liability.
  • Request and collect past-due and present balances or estimates.
  • Follow financial clearance policies for non-urgent patient services.
  • Identify patients needing financial assistance and refer them to a Financial Counselor.
  • Perform visit closure, including checking out patients and scheduling follow-up appointments.
  • Provide patients with appropriate documents.
  • Maintain knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, third-party payer requirements, insurance plans, pre-authorization/referral requirements, and accepted insurance plans.
  • Communicate customer service and process improvement issues to management.
  • Meet productivity requirements and department accuracy standards.
  • Maintain public relations with patients, families, and clinical staff.
  • Work collaboratively to support concise and timely information flow.
  • Report to a Supervisor or Manager
