Job summary

Jobtailor in Concord, NC is seeking a detail-oriented Patient Access Clerk to support registration and insurance verification within the EHR workflow. You will handle patient check-in, collect demographic and payment information, and ensure HIPAA compliance while delivering excellent service.

Responsibilities include greeting patients, navigating insurance questions, scheduling, and coordinating with physicians and billing staff.

Qualifications

  • High School Graduate
  • Flexibility to cover Monday–Friday shifts 6:30am–6:00pm and Saturdays when needed
  • Ability to work in a high-stress area independently, multitask, and manage interruptions
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent customer service and service recovery skills
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and patient privacy
  • Basic medical and insurance terminology knowledge
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and commercial payers
  • Notary training may be required as appropriate

Responsibilities

  • Create the initial electronic health record and prevent duplicate medical records
  • Positively identify patients before care delivery in compliance with accrediting-body mandates
  • Check in and register patients
  • Obtain and verify demographic, guarantor, and insurance information
  • Discuss and collect co-pays and other out-of-pocket responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information per HIPAA
  • Recognize insurance plans and explain financial responsibility
  • Refer patients to Financial Advocates when appropriate
  • Enforce rules and forms for HIPAA/EMTALA/consent and Medicare notices
  • Schedule appointments and coordinate cancellations, reschedules, wait-list, and recalls
  • Provide information about test prep, arrival times, and guidelines
  • Greet patients and visitors and provide excellent customer service
  • Answer and screen telephone calls and take messages
  • Assist with transportation, directions, wheelchairs, and interpreter services
  • Monitor and work EHR work queues
  • Respond to routine requests and emergencies in clerical areas
  • Escort patients to units as necessary
  • Perform other related duties as required

Job description

  • Create the initial electronic health record and prevent duplicate medical records
  • Positively identify patients before care delivery in compliance with accrediting-body mandates
  • Check in and register patients
  • Obtain and verify demographic, guarantor, and insurance information
  • Discuss and collect co-pays and other out-of-pocket responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient personal, financial, and medical-record information in accordance with HIPAA
  • Recognize commercial and government insurance plans and explain financial responsibility
  • Refer patients to Financial Advocates when appropriate
  • Enforce required rules, forms, questions, and signatures for compliance with HIPAA, EMTALA, consent, patient rights, Medicare notices, MSPQ, and ABN requirements
  • Schedule appointments and coordinate cancellations, reschedules, wait-list, and recall requests as needed
  • Provide information about test preparation, arrival times, medication/food/beverage guidelines, check-in procedures, and directions
  • Greet patients and visitors and provide extraordinary customer service
  • Answer and screen telephone calls and take messages
  • Assist with transportation, directions, wheelchairs, and interpreter services
  • Monitor and work assigned electronic health record work queues
  • Respond to routine information requests and emergencies in clerical areas
  • Escort patients to nursing units or outpatient departments as necessary
  • Perform other related duties as required
Requirements
  • High School Graduate
  • No experience required
  • No licensure, registration, and/or certification required
  • Flexibility to assist with Monday-Friday shift coverage from 6:30am-6:00pm and, when necessary, Saturdays
  • Ability to work in a high-profile, high-stress area independently, multitask, prioritize work, and handle large workloads with interruptions
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent customer service and service recovery skills

  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to educate patients about insurance coverage and unpaid or potentially unpaid services
  • Ability to interact with physicians and staff to resolve patient-care issues
  • Ability to collect and manage payments, including cash, and follow cash-handling security procedures
  • Strong computer proficiency, including insurance verification/eligibility tools, EPIC, patient liability estimation tools, email, Microsoft Office, internet browsers, and phone technology
  • Basic medical and insurance terminology knowledge
  • Knowledge of HIPAA-compliant handling of sensitive information and applicable state and federal regulations
  • General understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and commercial payers
  • Knowledge of Medicare, HIPAA, EMTALA rules and regulations and insurance pre-certification updates
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to act effectively as a resource to other staff
  • Ability to operate necessary equipment, transition between sitting and standing, remain mobile, lift up to 20 lbs. or more occasionally, and push/pull up to 50 lbs. with assistance
  • Ability to speak clearly and use fine motor skills for keyboard data entry
  • CPR certification may be required based on service location
  • Notary training/licensure may be required as appropriate for service line and/or facility
  • Preferred: experience with insurance verification/eligibility tools, EPIC, patient liability estimation tools, email, Microsoft Office, internet, and phone technology
