Job summary

Axis Health System in Gunnison, CO is seeking a Patient Experience Specialist II (Behavioral Health) for a full-time, day shift role. The position focuses on guiding patients through entry into Axis services, leading registration, and ensuring timely access to care.

The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of behavioral health or medical clinic experience, proficiency with EHRs and scheduling systems, and knowledge of Colorado payer requirements.

Qualifications

• 1 year of experience in behavioral health, community health, dental, or medical clinic environments.
• 1 year of Electronic Health Record and scheduling system experience.
• 1 year of knowledge of Colorado commercial insurance plans, Colorado Medicaid, managed care organizations, and other state-specific payer requirements.
• 1 year of experience understanding grant-funded services, contracted payer agreements, sliding fee programs, and eligibility requirements in nonprofit healthcare settings.
• 2 years of experience in customer service.
• Knowledge of industry specific terminology where appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Subject matter expert in Axis service-line specific patient enrollment and program requirements for all Axis locations.
• Responsible for overall patient registration tasks in a service-line specific role.
• Enroll patients in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and collect required documentation, including insurance eligibility, financial information, and screening forms, before new and follow-up appointments.
• Adheres to medical records standards and compliance requirements.
• Responsible for entry and verification of patient demographics, insurance and documentation.
• Schedule and confirm new patient appointments.
• Assist with waitlists and provider schedule template updates.
• Conduct appointment preparation activities, reminder calls, and patient outreach using approved tools.
• Ensure HIPAA compliance and escalate issues per policy.
• Attend required meetings and trainings and support clinical operations.
• Support workflow improvements and reporting for leadership.
• Maintain collaborative relationships with leadership, providers, peers and the public.
• Apply conflict resolution and escalation as needed to resolve issues.
• Comply with laws and ethics; protect patient confidentiality.
• Process patient payments and cash handling as assigned.
• Communicate analytically across service lines to coordinate patient care.
• Follow procedures for urgent patient situations and alerts to staff.
• Monitor internal communications and scheduling needs.
• Assist with training and onboarding as needed.
