Job summary

MercyOne Northeast Iowa is seeking a part-time Medical Secretary for our Waterloo area registration and outpatient services. The role focuses on gathering demographics and insurance information, pre-registering tests, and ensuring accurate documentation and patient flow in the clinic setting.

Responsibilities include verifying signatures, scanning documents, and communicating with patients and staff. Strong medical office experience and familiarity with HIPAA/EMTALA are preferred; English

Qualifications

• Requires ability to read, write and understand English and communicate with patients, visitors, staff and physicians.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or other general office training preferred.
• One year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, registration) preferred; hospital experience and medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills; experience with database/mainframe systems.

Responsibilities

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information and obtains appropriate signatures.
• Answers telephone; bed assignments; communicates with house supervisor.
• Informs patient of hospital regulations; secures armband and signatures on documents.
• Determines need for hospital issued ABN waiver.
• Ensures patient is escorted to assigned area and greets patients at check-in.
• Scans physician orders, driver licenses, insurance cards, consents, etc.
• Pre-registers all scheduled tests.
• Follows HIPAA, EMTALA and safety policies.
