Job summary

MercyOne Northeast Iowa, MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center, is seeking a part-time Medical Secretary for the Evening Shift. Responsibilities include gathering patient demographics, scheduling, insurance coordination, and patient escort/transport within the registration process, with adherence to HIPAA and EMTALA.

The role emphasizes accurate data entry, documentation, and strong communication, with a weekend rotation and a .6 FTE schedule.

Qualifications

• Requires ability to read, write and understand English and communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff and physicians.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or other general office training preferred.
• One year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, or registration) preferred. Hospital experience or medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills, Windows experience. Database software, mainframe information systems.
• Ability to convey positive image and communicate tactfully and professionally with staff, patients and the public.
• Ability to work with diverse groups of people and to work under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information and enters into computer system.
• Assigns patient rooms and coordinates with house supervisor as needed.
• Obtains signatures, scopes of ABN waivers, and informs patients of hospital regulations.
• Pre-registers all scheduled tests and prepares appropriate documentation.
• Scans physician orders, driving licenses, insurance cards and consents.
• Escorts patients to assigned area and meets/greets during registration process.
• Adheres to safety, infection control and HIPAA/EMTALA policies.
