Job summary

State of Connecticut is seeking a Telephone Operator for the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) in New Haven. The role involves operating a PBX/telephone switchboard, greeting visitors, routing calls, and performing clerical tasks in a public health setting.

This part-time position offers shift work with potential weekend/shift differentials and opportunities for professional growth. A comprehensive drug screen is required and there is no health/medical benefits eligibility for this role.

Qualifications

• Six months of experience operating electronic telephone systems.
• One year of substitute relief telephone operator coverage in a state agency may be substituted for general experience.
• Experience communicating effectively in Spanish.
• Experience interacting with callers and visitors using clear, professional communication.
• Experience operating electronic telephone and two-way radio systems along with performing computer-based tasks.
• Experience producing clear written and verbal communication.
• Experience performing general clerical duties in a customer-service setting.
• Experience working effectively under pressure in a fast-paced or high-volume environment.

Responsibilities

• Serves as a central answering point for incoming calls.
• Determines caller's needs and transfers caller to appropriate extension.
• Answers telephone inquiries and provides general information regarding activities of the agency.
• Receives and announces visitors and directs them to their destinations.
• Uses telephone to locate persons.
• Performs general clerical duties such as typing, filing, distribution, and processing of mail, receiving deliveries, etc.
• May staff communications center for agency.
• May train relief operators.
• Performs related duties as required.
