Job summary

City Year AmeriCorps members coach and mentor students to boost academic success and attendance. You will work with teachers on in-class support, and help develop positive behaviors and study habits across elementary to high school levels.

This entry-level role includes 2–4 weeks of initial training, a living stipend, and benefits through City Year. You’ll join a team dedicated to helping students thrive and become contributing community members.

Qualifications

• No prior experience required; 2–4 weeks of training provided.
• Eligible to work in the U.S. as a citizen or permanent resident (DACA not eligible).
• Ages 17–25 by July 1, 2025.
• GED or high school diploma, some college, or college degree.
• Background check required.

Responsibilities

• Work with identified students 1:1 and in small groups.
• Develop literacy and/or math skills through varied activities by student level.
• Answer student questions and encourage assignment completion.
• Create and implement a behavior management system for students.
• Develop interpersonal skills using guided strategies and reflection.
• Collaborate with teachers to collect, record and monitor progress in City Year’s data system.
• Create an engaging, safe and healthy classroom space in collaboration with the teacher.
• Support extended day and virtual programming before, during and after school including enrichment and intervention.
• Create, support and/or co-lead events recognizing student growth in math, literacy, attendance and behavior.
