Job summary

Caltech is seeking a full-time Facilities Maintenance worker at Palomar Observatory in Pasadena, CA. The role involves grounds and building upkeep, including painting, plumbing, and minor repairs, with duties across multiple sites and occasional heavy lifting.

You’ll work under supervision within the observatory’s facilities team. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, ability to lift 50 lbs, and comfort working outdoors in varied conditions at elevations up

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
Must safely operate basic and grounds tools and power tools including chainsaws.
Valid driver's license required and must be maintained.
Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform physical tasks daily.
Must work outdoors in various weather and uneven terrain.

Responsibilities

Perform grounds and building maintenance tasks, including painting, carpentry, plumbing, and preventive upkeep.
Repair walls, doors, roofs, water systems, and other facilities as needed.
Operate and maintain grounds equipment, mowers, and vehicles across sites.
Assist with general mechanic tasks, scheduled maintenance, and upgrades.
Document maintenance tasks and safety compliance in logs.
Inspect water/septic infrastructure and assist with repairs.
Support telescope, dome, and mirror maintenance as required.
