Job summary

Caltech is seeking a part-time janitorial/maintenance assistant for Palomar Observatory, reporting to the Facilities and Maintenance group supervisor. The role involves cleaning, grounds support, snow/ice removal, and general janitorial tasks on weekends (Saturday to Monday) and interaction with management, staff, and visitors.

Requirements include a high school diploma, valid driver’s license, ability to lift 50 lbs, and working outdoors in various conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Able to lift 50 lbs of equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Able to work outside in inclement weather and at elevation.
• Able to safely use basic tools.
• Successful completion of a background check and physical exam.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain floors, restrooms, and public areas with light equipment.
• Assist grounds maintenance and snow/ice removal.
• Non-hazardous waste collection and management.
• Open and close public visitor facilities.
• Assist with mirror cleaning and coating.
• Other duties as assigned.
