Job summary

Caltech is seeking a part-time, benefited janitorial and maintenance assistant at Palomar Observatory. You will work weekends (Saturday to Monday) under the Facilities and Maintenance supervisor, performing cleaning, building maintenance, and grounds support, and assisting with snow/ice removal as needed.

The role requires lifting 50 lbs, driving observatory vehicles, and communicating effectively with staff and the public.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license and maintenance thereof.
• Able to lift 50 lbs of maintenance equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Able to work outside in inclement weather at elevation (6000').
• Able to safely use basic tools.
• Successful completion of a background check and physical exam.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain floors, restrooms, and public areas.
• Assist with grounds maintenance and snow/ice removal.
• Manage non-hazardous waste collection and disposal.
• Open and close public visitor facilities.
• Assist with mirror cleaning and coating.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
