Job summary

Caltech at Palomar Observatory is seeking a part-time janitorial technician to perform cleaning and maintenance on weekends (Saturday to Monday) under the Facilities and Maintenance supervisor. Duties include cleaning floors and restrooms, assisting with grounds maintenance, snow/ice removal, and opening/closing visitor facilities.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver's license, the ability to lift 50 lbs and work outside in varying weather and at elevation, plus

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Valid driver's license and ability to maintain it throughout employment.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs of facility maintenance equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Able to work outside in inclement weather and at elevation.
• Ability to safely use basic tools.
• Successful completion of a background check and physical exam.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain floors, restrooms, and public areas; lift >50 lbs and drive observatory vehicles.
• Assist staff in grounds maintenance and snow/ice removal.
• Non-hazardous waste collection and management.
• Open and close public visitor facilities.
• Assist with mirror cleaning and coating.
• Other duties as assigned.
