Job summary

Caltech in Pasadena, CA is seeking a full-time Facilities Maintenance worker for Palomar Observatory. The role involves grounds and building upkeep, mowing, tree trimming, painting, and basic repairs across the observatory campus.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance tasks, equipment troubleshooting, and assisting with water/septic systems. Strong safety awareness and ability to lift 50 lbs are required; a valid driver’s license is necessary.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be able to safely use basic tools, grounds tools, power tools, and chain saws.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain it throughout the course of employment
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. of facility maintenance equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Ability to walk, stand, push, pull, climb, twist, stoop, and bend to accomplish job requirements on a variety of terrains.
• Must be able to work outside in inclement weather, in confined and/or elevated spaces, at an elevation of 6000’.
• Preferred Qualifications: 3 or more years of grounds and facility/building maintenance experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform grounds and building maintenance tasks, including weed/brush abatement, mowing, tree trimming, fence repair, and painting.
• Assist with general mechanic tasks such as preventive maintenance and unplanned repairs.
• Troubleshoot and repair observatory equipment, including lawn/ground equipment and vehicles.
• Schedule and document preventive maintenance for grounds and buildings.
• Assist with water and septic infrastructure inspection and repair.
• Support telescope and dome maintenance tasks as needed.
