Job summary

Caltech is seeking a full-time Grounds and Facilities Maintenance worker to join the Palomar Observatory team in Palomar Mountain, CA. The role involves building and grounds upkeep, painting, tree trimming, mowing, and water/septic system work, with duties across facilities and equipment.

The position requires physical stamina, the ability to lift 50 lbs, and driving observatory vehicles. A valid driver’s license and safety mindset are essential, with outdoor work in varied weather conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be able to safely use basic tools, grounds tools, power tools, and chain saws.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain it throughout employment.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. of equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Ability to walk, stand, push, pull, climb, twist, stoop, and bend on varied terrain.

Responsibilities

• Building maintenance including wall/door/roof repair, painting, wood working, water systems and plumbing repair, and other building maintenance tasks.
• Assist with general mechanic tasks and preventive maintenance.
• Basic troubleshooting and repair of observatory equipment, including lawn/ground equipment and vehicles.
• Grounds maintenance such as mowing, tree trimming, fencing, and weather-related tasks.
• Schedule and document grounds and buildings preventive maintenance tasks.
• Assist with water and septic infrastructure inspection and repair.
• Assist with telescope and dome maintenance tasks as needed.
