UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC, is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position for prelicensure nursing students to gain hands-on patient care experience on the 6 Medicine Specialty unit. Working with an RN partner, you will perform nursing tasks within your scope of practice under supervision, focusing on learning and skill development in a real clinical setting.

The externship runs May 24–July 31, 2027, with a 36-hour work week and on-site rotations.

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
• Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
• CPR knowledge is preferred.

Responsabilités

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information during care and reports changes to a RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Assists with measurements (vital signs, height/weight), specimen collection, wound care, and ADLs.
• Provides direct personal care and support for activities of daily living.
• Maintains cleanliness, restocks supplies, and supports routine clerical tasks.
• Reinforces patient teaching and documents understanding.
• Aids providers with routine examinations and emergency equipment needs.
• Supports patient care in psychiatric settings including de-escalation and safety measures.
