Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC, seeks a Student Nurse Extern I to join the 6 Medicine Specialty unit. The extern will work with an RN partner, performing supervised nursing tasks and gaining hands-on experience in a high-acuity setting.

Requires enrollment in a prelicensure program, HS diploma, and BLS; position is temporary full-time with 36 hours per week onsite. This program provides clinical exposure and supports patient care delivery.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to a nurse.
• Assist patients and families with admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide direct patient care within student extern scope under RN guidance.
• Support routine examinations, procedures, and equipment procurement.
• Maintain clean work area, restock supplies, and perform light clerical tasks.
• Reinforce patient teaching under supervision.
