Job summary

Emerus is seeking a Patient Access Specialist for a night shift (7pm-7am) in a 16-bed small-format hospital. The role liaises between patients, payers, and the healthcare team to verify demographics, secure payments, and maximize hospital reimbursement.

You will verify insurance, obtain authorizations, protect patient information under EMTALA/HIPAA, and provide excellent customer service at the front desk. Experience in ED registration is strongly preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 2 years of patient registration and insurance verification in a health care setting preferred.
• Emergency Department registration experience strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of various insurance plans (HMO, PPO, POS, Medicare, Medicaid) and payors required.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology.
• Excellent customer service.
• Working knowledge of MS Office (MS Word, Excel and Outlook).
• Fluency in English; Spanish required in the El Paso Market.

Responsibilities

• Obtain, verify, and enter complete and accurate demographic information to facilitate smooth processing through the revenue cycle.
• Verify insurance benefits for all plans and confirm correct payor and plan in the patient accounting system.
• Obtain insurance authorizations as required by plans where applicable.
• Maximize collections by pursuing payments at time of service in a customer service manner.
• Answer telephone professionally, record messages and communicate to medical staff.
• Maintain cash drawer and logs of patients, payments, transfers and admissions.
• Assist with coordinating transfers between hospitals when necessary.
• Respond to medical record requests from patients, physicians and hospitals.
