Job summary

Porchlight Inc. in Madison is seeking a Shelter Assistant for the Men’s Drop-In Shelter (DIS). This role requires staying awake and present throughout the night from 4:00 PM to Midnight to ensure a peaceful, safe environment and smooth shelter operations.

You may also serve as Intake Supervisor at the start of a shift, supporting guests, following established procedures, and coordinating with Shelter Case Managers for referrals as needed.

Responsibilities

• Maintains oversight and responsible supervision of guests according to Porchlight policies.
• Demonstrates crisis de-escalation and active listening skills.
• Pursues Crisis Intervention Team Training (CIT).
• Assists in orienting new and returning guests and answering questions for low-barrier shelter use.
• Follows DIS procedures, incident reporting, and general operation.
• Issues blankets, towels and sheets to guests.
• Monitors shelter cleanliness and nightly touch points per COVID-19 guidelines.
• Secures facility before opening and after closing.
• Provides support to guests and referrals to Shelter Case Managers as needed.
