Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Patient Access Specialist to support patient scheduling, intake, and insurance verification in a fast-paced environment. You will conduct medical necessity checks, gather demographics, and ensure accurate data in Epic and other systems.

Responsibilities include delivering excellent customer service, protecting patient privacy per HIPAA, and collaborating with hospital departments to direct patients efficiently.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 2–3 years customer service or medical office experience.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in computer data-entry/typing.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Ability to type 40 wpm.
• Ability to multi-task.
• Healthcare privacy awareness (HIPAA).

Responsibilities

• Consistently practices Patients First philosophy and adheres to high standards of customer service.
• Responds to questions and concerns.
• Interacts with hospital departments to schedule patients and direct them through NMHC systems.
• Performs medical necessity checks as needed and communicates options if appointments fail.
• Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations.
• Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits in online tools.
• Completes accurate handoffs and notes in Epic.
• Acts as a training resource for new staff and cross-trains for coverage.
