Job summary

Cart.com is seeking a Merchant of Record Accountant to own MoR accounting operations across brands. You will ensure payment processing integrity, handle settlements, tax compliance, reconciliations, and strong internal controls in a fast-paced ecommerce environment.

You will partner with cross-functional teams to optimize processes, support month-end close, and drive financial accuracy while maintaining compliance. US work eligibility required; visa sponsorship not provided.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
• 3–7 years of payments operations or related field in e-commerce, SaaS, digital goods, marketplace, or technology-enabled services.
• Strong understanding of payment processing, settlements, merchant accounts, and financial controls.
• Hands-on experience preparing reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close support.
• Advanced Excel skills and experience analyzing large datasets.
• Working knowledge of SQL and reporting or analytics tools.
• Prior experience supporting or operating a Merchant of Record model or managing MoR vendors and platforms.
• Experience with payment platforms such as Stripe, Braintree, PayPal, or similar providers.
• Familiarity with tax automation solutions such as Avalara, TaxJar, or comparable systems.
• Experience with ERP platforms such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, NetSuite, or similar applications.

Responsibilities

• Own the accounting and operational oversight of Merchant of Record activities across supported brands.
• Monitor and resolve urgent payment exceptions, including settlement failures, payment holds, chargebacks, and significant refunds.
• Maintain rigorous transaction-level review processes to minimize errors, prevent revenue leakage, and ensure financial accuracy.
• Serve as the primary liaison for payment processing, settlements, reconciliations, tax compliance, and financial reporting related to MoR operations.
• Perform and oversee reconciliations between payment platforms, banking activity, operational systems, and the general ledger.
• Support month-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and reporting.
• Ensure accurate sales tax collection, remittance, and reporting across applicable jurisdictions.
• Manage tax configurations and coordinate with internal and external partners to maintain compliance.
• Support audits and regulatory inquiries related to payment operations and Merchant of Record activities.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance accounting policies, operational procedures, and internal controls.
• Able to act with urgency while maintaining compliance, risk management, and financial controls.
