Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. This role focuses on protection philosophy development, relay settings, and power system studies for transmission and substation projects.

You will also review substation P&C design, coordinate with design teams, and support field commissioning. Ideal candidates have ABET‑accredited EE degrees with 10+ years of protection experience, strong CAPE/ASPEN skills, and the ability to communicate with utility

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 10+ years of system protection engineering experience for transmission/substation projects.
• Experience with relay settings and protection studies.
• Proficiency with CAPE/ASPEN or equivalent protection analysis tools.
• Experience with Powerbase or similar relay/asset databases.
• Ability to read P&C drawings (one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics).
• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, NERC/PRC standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication, and stakeholder interaction.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and breakers.
• Perform short‑circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time‑current curve development.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor relays using vendor software.
• Support event analysis and misoperation investigations with relay data and oscillography.
• Develop and review P&C design documents with substation design teams.
• Provide protection requirements and markups to guide P&C design and field activities.
• Support commissioning and field energization, RFIs, and resolution of protection issues.
