Job summary

FirstEnergy’s Mon Power division is seeking Journeyman Linemen for outdoor construction and maintenance across the service territory. The role involves climbing poles, testing lines, and working with transformers and switches in varied weather, often requiring extended hours.

A sanctioned apprenticeship is required, with a valid Class A license anticipated on day one, plus pre-employment screenings. The position emphasizes safety, team collaboration, and training junior linemen.

Qualifications

• Completion of a federal or state sanctioned line worker apprenticeship with approved supporting documentation (e.g. IBEW Journeyman Lineman A Ticket) and/or union or union-affiliated sponsored line worker apprenticeship
• Must possess a valid Class A driving permit by first day of employment
• Must have passed a DMV medical exam by first day of employment
• Must live within 40 minutes of assigned Service Center
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High School diploma or GED and 5 years electric line utility experience
• Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds
• Ability to work and drive in all types of weather and road conditions
• Capable of working extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays
• Successful candidates must pass pre-employment requirements: drug screen, background check, POPA
• Experienced in rubber gloving and hot stick procedures
• Experience in transmission and distribution work, underground and numerous voltages
• Effective team player with strong communication skills

• Current FirstEnergy Employees: qualify on prerequisite tests; POPA; JALP

Responsibilities

• Travels to various job locations within assigned region
• Reviews job work requirements and provides input for the day
• Loads and unloads tools, materials and supplies
• Lifts, pulls and carries insulators, cross-arms, equipment
• Climb poles using boot hooks or aerial lift
• Tests, frames; sets and anchors poles; strings electric lines
• Performs substation switching; installs/replaces switches and meters
• Hangs and energizes transformers
• Take voltage readings
• Troubleshoots problems on overhead/underground lines
• Work includes hand/power tools, digging holes, climbing, heights >35’, live circuits
• Sets/installs underground structures, locates/terminates cables
• Operates hydraulic equipment and bucket truck
• Operates lift equipment and forklift
• Drives to access job sites and may drive Class A vehicle
• Journeyman Lineman may lead crew, provide on-the-job training
• Must complete mandated OSHA and company training
• Provides on-the-job training to apprentices
