Job summary

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is seeking a Highway Technician Assistant I for the Gallatin County Unit in Sparta, KY. This full-time, state employment involves basic highway maintenance tasks, equipment operation, and seasonal snow/ice duties in outdoor environments.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma, 18+ years old, and the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months. On-site work with health, retirement, and development benefits are provided.

Qualifications

  • Within 12 months, must furnish documentation of a valid Class B CDL.

Responsibilities

  • Operate small single axle dump trucks hauling materials to and from job sites.
  • Operate dump trucks with snow plow and salt spreader during winter months.
  • Operate a tractor-type mowing machine, assist in brush cutting, and use chemical sprayers.
  • Learn and assist with basic surveying activities or construction projects.
  • Flag for operations requiring traffic control and ensure safety on site.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

By joining our Gallatin County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant I, you'll have the opportunity to perform basic level work of highway roadway or roadside and construction operations.

  • Operate a small single axle dump truck hauling materials to and from job sites.
  • Operate dump trucks with snow plow and salt spreader to work in the winter months.
  • Operate a tractor-type mowing machine, assist in brush cutting, and use chemical sprayers.

  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license. Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions

Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
