Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky, Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways, is seeking a Transportation Engrng Technologist Ill in Kenton County. The role focuses on engineering projects, plan/specs preparation, cost estimation, and data analysis for planning and traffic studies.

The position requires a bachelor's or associate degree in engineering technology or related fields, plus four years of engineering experience, a valid driver's license, and eligibility for overtime.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering technology or related field OR associate degree with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program.
  • Four years of engineering-related experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain required licensure/certifications.
  • Substitute education for experience options are allowed as described in the ad.
  • Possession of an EIT certification or other listed substitutions may apply.

Responsibilities

By joining our Engineering Support Branch as a Transportation Engineering Technologist Ill in Kenton County,you'll have the opportunity to complete a variety of complex technical engineering projects including plans,proposals, specifications, and addenda.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Reviews completed work of contractors.
  • Performs inspections of various maintenance contract activitiessuch as guardrail, panel signs, pavement striping, mowing, traffic signals, roadway lighting, and encroachmentpermits.
  • Develops and maintains project documentation.
  • Estimates project cost.
  • Prepares technical reports.
  • Providescost estimates for maintenance projects, check final bills and estimates.
  • Reviews construction or designdocumentation for technical accuracy.
  • Collects, analyzes, and evaluates planning data used in mapping, Highway Performance Monitoring System, Highway Performance Monitoring System, adequacy ratings, traffic forecasts, rail and highway crossings and project planning activities.
  • Provides data for traffic counts, delay and speed studies, crashes, mowing acreages, panel sign dimensions, and otherneeded data.
  • Organizes and conducts meetings in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of projects.
  • Actsas departmental liaison between contractor and, or, governmental agencies investigating multilateral disputes orcomplaints.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION:

Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, computer science, data science, geology, earth science, industrial technology, industrial drafting, design technology or construction technology. OR Graduate with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:

Four years of engineering-related experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:
  • 1. Possess a valid EIT certification issued by the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors
  • 2. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree OR an associate degree in an engineering field
  • 3. High school
  • 4. High school
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:
  • 1. Must have four years of engineering-related experience with the first education option above;
  • 2. Must have seven years of engineering-related experience with the second education option above;
  • 3. Must have ten years of engineering-related experience in which case related technical or vocational training will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years with the third education option above;
  • 4. Must have eight years of bridge inspection experience under the supervision of a Qualified InspectionTeam Leader, plus successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course with the fourth education option above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):

Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possess and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites and other types of work zones which require the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
