Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is hiring for a Highway Technician Assistant I in Dayhoit, KY. The position involves operating heavy equipment, basic labor tasks on roadways, and supporting maintenance and construction activities.

Ideal candidates will be 18+, hold a valid driver's license, and be willing to obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months, plus complete required training including First Aid, Snow & Ice, Traffic Control/Flagger, and OSHA 10 certifications.

By joining our Project Delivery and Preservation Branch II as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Harlan County; you’ll have the opportunity to perform a variety of general labor functions and operate basic automotive and power equipment such as, but not limited to, bushhogs, chainsaws, chemical sprayers, chippers, jackhammers, mowing tractors, single axle truck (dump, flatbed, pickup), snowplow and salt spreader, broom sweepers and weed trimmers.

• Operate dump trucks with snowplow and salt spreader during Snow and Ice season.
• Operate a tractor-type mowing machine, assist in brush cutting, and use chemical sprayers
• Flag for operations requiring traffic control.
• Learn and assist with basic surveying activities on construction projects, maintenance and repair of roadways.
• Attend required training classes

Ideal Candidate will have experience in:

• Experience working on rough terrain and in changing climates
• Basic maintenance or construction experience
• Eligibility to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License
• Basic equipment operating experience

Working Conditions Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Probationary Period This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
