The Commonwealth of Kentucky, Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways, is seeking a Highway Technician Assistant I in Dayhoit. This full-time role involves operating heavy equipment, assisting in maintenance and construction tasks, and supporting snow and ice operations.

A high school diploma and driver’s license are required, with CDL within 12 months and mandatory safety trainings. Ideal candidates will be prepared for outdoor work, varying weather, and extended hours.

Within one year must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Operate dump trucks with snowplow and salt spreader during Snow and Ice season.
• Operate a tractor-type mowing machine, assist in brush cutting, and use chemical sprayers
• Flag for operations requiring traffic control.
• Learn and assist with basic surveying activities on construction projects, maintenance and repair of roadways.
• Attend required training classes

By joining our Project Delivery and Preservation Branch II as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Harlan County;you’ll have the opportunity to perform a variety of general labor functions and operate basic automotive andpower equipment such as, but not limited to, bushhogs, chainsaws, chemical sprayers, chippers, jackhammers,mowing tractors, single axle truck (dump, flatbed, pickup), snowplow and salt spreader, broom sweepers andweed trimmers.

Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant I position will complete tasks such as:

• Operate dump trucks with snowplow and salt spreader during Snow and Ice season.
• Operate a tractor-type mowing machine, assist in brush cutting, and use chemical sprayers
• Flag for operations requiring traffic control.
• Learn and assist with basic surveying activities on construction projects, maintenance and repair ofroadways.
• Attend required training classes

Ideal Candidate will have experience in:

• Experience working on rough terrain and in changing climates
• Basic maintenance or construction experience
• Eligibility to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License
• Basic equipment operating experience

Working Conditions

Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
