Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Charleston Maintenance Office is seeking qualified Heavy Equipment Operators. This role operates a range of heavy machinery, with CDL training opportunities and a fixed 7:00 AM–3:30 PM, Monday–Friday schedule, plus occasional overtime for inclement weather operations.

The position requires a valid driver's license and the potential to obtain a Class A CDL within six months.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as Backhoe, Dozer, Excavator, Loader, Lowboy, Grader and other equipment as directed.
• Support foreman in daily safety practices, flagging, PPE, and vehicle safety inspections.
• Assist with inclement weather operations, snow/ice plans, and hurricane lane reversal plans.
• Perform related duties including maintenance tasks like drainage work, pothole patching, and curb/sidewalk preparation.
