Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation's Charleston Maintenance Office is seeking qualified Heavy Equipment Operators to operate a variety of heavy machinery and participate in training to obtain a CDL. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with occasional overtime during inclement weather.

Operators will handle equipment such as motor graders, loaders, tractors with ditchers, and slope mowers to maintain highways, clear rights-of-way, and perform related

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as motor grader, front end loader, tractor with ditcher, and slope mower.
• Perform road maintenance tasks including ditch clearing, pothole patching, and shoulder repairs.
• Control traffic in work zones and flag traffic for crew and public safety.
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations and be on call for after-hours emergencies.
