Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation in Charleston seeks qualified maintenance mechanics to service a wide range of heavy equipment and diesel trucks, plus passenger vehicles. Tools are provided; training opportunities are available.

Workweek is Monday–Friday, with overtime possibilities and comprehensive state benefits. Eligible candidates must have at least 6 months of related experience, a valid driver’s license, and must obtain a Class A CDL within six months.

Qualifications

• Six months of work experience directly related to the area of employment.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Assist other mechanics with routine maintenance and general repairs to heavy equipment and engines.
• Perform vehicle preventive maintenance (up to level III) on state equipment.
• Troubleshoot vehicle electrical problems and train in diagnostic equipment.
• Check fuel, water and lubricating oil levels; perform light engine and brake repairs.
• Install and repair inclement weather equipment (snow plows, spreaders).
• Be on-call for after-hours emergencies and assist with shop maintenance.
