Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking qualified mechanics for its Charleston Maintenance Office. You will work on heavy equipment, diesel trucks, and passenger vehicles with provided tools and training opportunities.

Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm, with possible overtime and comprehensive state benefits including health insurance and paid time off. Responsibilities include assisting with repairs, performing preventive maintenance, and responding to service

Qualifications

• Six months of work experience directly related to the area of employment.
• Completion of one academic year of SC High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six months of experience.
• Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; CDL-A required within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Assist mechanics with routine maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and diesel trucks.
• Perform preventive maintenance on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001–011) and diagnose electrical issues.
• Repair transmissions, brakes, exhausts, fuel injection systems, and related components.
• Assist in field service calls and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
• Maintain shop organization and participate in training sessions.
