Head Varsity Outdoor Track & Field Coach
North Middlesex Regional High School
North Middlesex Regional High School is seeking a qualified, motivated, and student-centered candidate for the position of Head Varsity Outdoor Track & Field Coach.
The Head Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, organization, development, and culture of the North Middlesex Outdoor Track & Field Program. The successful candidate will provide a positive, competitive, inclusive, and development-focused experience for student-athletes while overseeing a program that serves athletes across a wide range of events, abilities, and experience levels.
Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership, organization, and direction for the North Middlesex Outdoor Track & Field Program.
- Plan and oversee organized, purposeful practices that address the needs of student-athletes across all track and field event groups.
- Develop and coordinate appropriate training plans for sprints, distance, hurdles, relays, jumps, throws, and other applicable events.
- Coordinate assistant coaches and establish clear responsibilities for event groups, instruction, supervision, and meet-day responsibilities.
- Establish a consistent program philosophy, expectations, terminology, and approach to student-athlete development.
- Evaluate student-athletes and help identify events that best match their abilities, interests, development, and team needs.
- Coordinate meet entries, relay teams, event assignments, and competitive strategies.
- Provide student-athletes with constructive instruction, feedback, and opportunities for continued development.
- Promote participation while maintaining appropriate competitive standards and preparing student-athletes for league and postseason competition.
- Establish clear expectations for attendance, effort, accountability, behavior, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic responsibility.
- Promote effort, accountability, respect, teamwork, resilience, personal improvement, and positive representation of North Middlesex.
- Create an environment that welcomes experienced competitors as well as student-athletes who are new to track and field.
- Work collaboratively with assistant coaches to provide appropriate instruction and supervision across multiple event areas.
- Maintain appropriate supervision of student-athletes before, during, and after practices and competitions, including locker rooms, facilities, and transportation locations.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with student-athletes, families, coaches, administrators, officials, and opposing programs.
- Follow and reinforce the Athletic Department's communication protocol while encouraging appropriate student-athlete self-advocacy.
- Prioritize student-athlete health and safety and follow all applicable emergency, concussion, weather, heat, and return-to-play procedures.
- Ensure appropriate instruction, supervision, and safety procedures for throwing, jumping, hurdling, and other specialized event areas.
- Manage program equipment, uniforms, inventory, facility needs, and other program resources in coordination with the Athletic Department.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Athletics regarding scheduling, transportation, facilities, staffing, meet management, and overall program needs.
- Collaborate with the North Middlesex middle school track programs to promote participation, consistency, and a developmental pathway into the high school program.
- Attend required Athletic Department, league, postseason, and program meetings.
- Follow all North Middlesex Regional School District, Athletic Department, Mid-Wach League, and MIAA policies, rules, and procedures.
- Represent North Middlesex Athletics professionally and model appropriate conduct and sportsmanship.
- Perform additional program-related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Previous track and field coaching and/or competitive experience.
- Previous head coaching or significant varsity track and field coaching experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of track and field fundamentals, rules, training principles, meet procedures, and student-athlete development.
- Knowledge and experience across multiple track and field event areas.
- Ability to effectively organize and supervise a large program with student-athletes participating in multiple event groups and locations.
- Ability to lead, coordinate, and develop an assistant coaching staff.
- Ability to create effective training plans while accounting for different events, experience levels, and student-athlete needs.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
- Commitment to creating a positive, inclusive, competitive, and development-focused program.
- Commitment to student-athlete academic achievement, character development, sportsmanship, personal improvement, and overall well-being.
- Ability to communicate appropriately and professionally with families while supporting student-athlete self-advocacy.
- Willingness to collaborate with the middle school track programs and other North Middlesex athletic programs.
- Completion of all required district and MIAA coaching certifications prior to participation.
- The successful candidate will understand that leading a track and field program requires balancing participation, individual development, team success, and competitive excellence. The Head Coach will be responsible for creating a unified program across all event groups, effectively utilizing the coaching staff, developing student-athletes from entry-level participants through postseason competitors, and building a strong pathway from middle school through the varsity program.

Salary: $5,989 to $6,825 Stipend
