North Middlesex Regional High School, part of North Middlesex Regional School District, is seeking an Assistant Unified Track & Field Coach to support the Head Coach in Townsend, MA.

The role focuses on inclusive, developmentally appropriate practices, teamwork, and meaningful opportunities for Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners.

This after-school stipend position requires dedication to inclusion, safety, and collaboration with school staff.

Qualifications

  • Previous coaching experience and/or Unified Sports experience.
  • Experience working with students with intellectual disabilities preferred.
  • Track and field coaching, competitive, or instructional experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of track and field fundamentals, events, rules, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to adapt instruction and provide individualized support for student-athletes with a wide range of abilities and needs.
  • Strong communication, patience, organization, and relationship-building skills.
  • Commitment to meaningful participation for both Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Head Coach with the organization and daily operation of the Unified Track & Field Program.
  • Assist in planning and conducting organized, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Provide instruction and supervision for assigned track and field events and activities.
  • Teach proper fundamentals, techniques, rules, and safety procedures.
  • Provide appropriate instruction, modifications, and support based on individual student-athlete needs and abilities.
  • Support meaningful participation and appropriate competitive opportunities for all team members.
  • Foster positive and authentic relationships between Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners.
  • Promote independence, confidence, communication, teamwork, accountability, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
  • Reinforce expectations for attendance, effort, behavior, teamwork, and team responsibilities.
  • Assist student-athletes with transitions, routines, communication, and other supports when appropriate.
  • Assist with event assignments, meet entries, timing, results, and other competition responsibilities as assigned.
  • Help Unified partners understand their role in promoting meaningful participation, inclusion, teamwork, and appropriate competition.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision of student-athletes before, during, and after practices and competitions, including transportation locations and athletic facilities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Head Coach, school staff, special education staff, and Athletic Department to support student-athlete needs.
  • Communicate professionally and appropriately with student-athletes, families, coaches, administrators, officials, and opposing programs.
  • Prioritize student-athlete health and safety and follow all applicable emergency, concussion, weather, heat, and return-to-play procedures.
  • Assist with equipment setup, breakdown, storage, uniforms, inventory, and other program responsibilities.
  • Attend required practices, competitions, coaching staff meetings, Athletic Department meetings, and other program activities.
  • Follow all North Middlesex Regional School District, Athletic Department, MIAA, and applicable Special Olympics Unified Sports policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Represent North Middlesex Athletics professionally and model inclusion, respect, sportsmanship, and appropriate conduct.
  • Perform additional program-related duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Director of Athletics.

Assistant Unified Track & Field Coach

North Middlesex Regional High School

North Middlesex Regional High School is seeking a qualified, motivated, and student-centered candidate for the position of Assistant Unified Track & Field Coach.

The Assistant Unified Track & Field Coach will work collaboratively with the Head Coach to provide a positive, inclusive, competitive, and developmentally appropriate athletic experience for all members of the North Middlesex Unified Track & Field Program.

The successful candidate will support the mission of Unified Sports by helping create meaningful opportunities for Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners to train, compete, develop relationships, and experience the benefits of belonging to a school athletic team.

  • Understanding of the philosophy and purpose of Unified Sports and the athlete-partner model.
  • Ability to adapt instruction and provide individualized support for student-athletes with a wide range of abilities and needs.
  • Strong communication, patience, organization, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Coach and other members of the school community.
  • Commitment to meaningful participation for both Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners.
  • Commitment to inclusion, student development, teamwork, sportsmanship, independence, and overall student-athlete well-being.
  • Completion of all required district, MIAA, and applicable Unified Sports coaching requirements prior to participation.

The successful candidate will embrace a team-first and inclusion-focused approach while supporting the direction established by the Head Coach. The Assistant Coach will play an important role in providing individualized instruction, appropriate supervision, and meaningful athletic opportunities for Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners.

Success will be measured through meaningful participation, student growth, competitive development, teamwork, inclusion, sportsmanship, and the overall student-athlete experience.
