Job summary

North Middlesex Regional School District is seeking two Assistant Middle School Outdoor Track Coaches for Hawthorne Brook Middle School and Nissitissit Middle School. You will assist the Head Coach, help plan practices, supervise athletes, and reinforce safe, development-focused instruction across events.

Preferred candidates have coaching or track experience with middle schoolers, strong communication, and the ability to work with a diverse group.

Assistant Middle School Outdoor Track Coaches

North Middlesex Regional School District

North Middlesex Regional School District is seeking qualified, motivated, and student-centered candidates for two Assistant Middle School Outdoor Track Coach positions:

Hawthorne Brook Middle School (HBMS) – Assistant Outdoor Track Coach

Nissitissit Middle School (NMS) – Assistant Outdoor Track Coach

Each Assistant Coach will work collaboratively with the Head Coach at their respective middle school to provide a positive, safe, organized, and developmentally appropriate track and field experience. The program emphasizes participation, fundamental skill development, personal improvement, teamwork, sportsmanship, and preparation for future participation at the high school level.

• Assist the Head Coach with the organization and daily operation of the middle school outdoor track program.
• Assist in planning and conducting organized, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate practices.
• Provide instruction and supervision for assigned track and field event groups.
• Teach proper fundamentals and techniques across track and field events.
• Help student-athletes explore multiple events and identify areas in which they can develop and contribute.
• Provide age-appropriate instruction emphasizing proper technique, conditioning, mobility, and overall athletic development.
• Support the Head Coach in managing larger groups of student-athletes and maintaining appropriate coach-to-athlete supervision.
• Promote participation, individual improvement, effort, accountability, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive team culture.
• Reinforce expectations for attendance, behavior, effort, safety, and team responsibilities.
• Assist with event assignments, meet entries, timing, results, and other meet-day responsibilities as assigned.
• Supervise student-athletes at practices, meets, transportation locations, and other team activities.
• Communicate professionally and appropriately with student-athletes, families, coaches, school staff, administrators, officials, and opposing programs.
• Prioritize student-athlete health and safety and follow all applicable emergency, concussion, weather, heat, and return-to-play procedures.
• Ensure proper instruction and supervision when student-athletes are using track and field equipment and facilities.
• Assist with equipment setup, breakdown, storage, inventory, and care.
• Attend required practices, meets, coaching staff meetings, and other program activities.
• Work collaboratively with the Head Coach and other North Middlesex track and field coaches to promote consistency and student-athlete development.
• Follow all North Middlesex Regional School District and Athletic Department policies, procedures, and expectations.
• Represent North Middlesex Athletics professionally and model appropriate conduct and sportsmanship.
• Perform additional program-related duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Director of Athletics.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

• Previous track and field coaching and/or competitive experience.
• Knowledge of track and field fundamentals, events, rules, techniques, and age-appropriate training principles.
• Previous experience working with middle school-aged students preferred.
• Ability to teach and supervise student-athletes with a wide range of experience and ability levels.
• Strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Coach and other members of the coaching staff.
• Willingness to provide instruction across multiple track and field events based on program needs.
• Commitment to creating a positive, inclusive, safe, and development-focused environment.
• Commitment to participation, personal improvement, teamwork, sportsmanship, and student-athlete well-being.
• Completion of all required district coaching certifications and requirements prior to participation.

The successful candidates will understand that the Assistant Coach plays an important role in providing effective instruction and appropriate supervision for a large and diverse group of middle school student-athletes. Assistant Coaches should be willing to work wherever needed within the program while supporting the direction and expectations established by the Head Coach.

The HBMS and NMS programs operate as separate teams while remaining part of one North Middlesex athletic program, with an emphasis on creating a positive developmental pathway into high school track and field.
