Rain is seeking a Head of Engineering to own the craft, quality, and technical direction of a ~50-person engineering org. You will lead a mix of senior engineers and managers, shaping architecture, data models, and system reliability for high-scale payments.

You’ll stay hands-on and influence design reviews and code quality. The role emphasizes a practical, fast-moving approach, strong coaching, and cross‑functional collaboration with Product, Risk, and Compliance.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building production software, including 3+ years managing and developing engineers.
• Hands-on in production code within the last year and continuing in a technical role.
• Deep experience with distributed backend systems at scale, including data modeling and event-driven design.
• Track record of raising engineering bar with measurable improvements.
• Experience in payments, fintech, or banking infrastructure for correctness and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Lead, grow, and develop a high-performing team of 4–6 senior engineers, owning hiring and coaching.
• Own architecture and technical direction of Rain’s core services across boundaries and data models.
• Remain hands-on ~30% of the time via PR reviews, prototyping, debugging, and scoped implementation.
• Raise engineering standards in testing, observability, incident response, and on-call practices.
• Drive reliability, auditability, and platform maturity for money-moving systems.
• Translate business goals into clear technical plans and communicate tradeoffs across teams.
• Partner with Head of Engineering on organizational design and scaling practices.
