Hurt & Proffitt is seeking a geotechnical project engineer or project geologist with four to six years of relevant experience to support our geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing practice in our Lynchburg office. This role emphasizes technical execution and project coordination with a clear path toward project management.

The selected candidate will work with engineers, geologists, and technicians on diverse projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, geology, or a closely related field.
  • Four to six years of progressively responsible geotechnical engineering or engineering geology experience.
  • Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist licensure; candidates eligible to obtain PE within 12 months will be considered.
  • Experience planning/perfoming subsurface investigations and coordinating field/lab testing.
  • Ability to interpret data and prepare organized, professional technical reports.
  • Strong written/verbal communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate subsurface investigations with project managers; review plans, determine boring locations, and schedule access and drilling.
  • Lead field investigations; classify soil/rock cores; collect groundwater readings; log boring details.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing and interpret results for soils and rocks.
  • Perform geotechnical evaluations for foundations, earthwork, slopes, pavement, etc.; develop recommendations and reports.
  • Support construction-phase services with field coordination and client communication.
  • Review field/test reports for accuracy and alignment with project requirements.
