Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt is seeking a geotechnical project engineer or project geologist with four to six years of relevant experience for our Lynchburg, VA office. You will support subsurface investigations, engineering evaluations, and technical reporting across diverse projects including commercial, institutional, and transportation sectors.

The role emphasizes technical execution, field coordination, and mentoring staff, with a clear path toward project management as skills and client relationships

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, geology or closely related field.
  • Four to six years of progressively responsible geotechnical engineering or engineering geology experience.
  • PE or PG licensure; candidates eligible to obtain PE within ~12 months considered.
  • Experience planning subsurface investigations and coordinating field/lab testing.
  • Ability to interpret field/lab data and develop soil/rock parameters.
  • Ability to produce organized, technical geotechnical reports.
  • Experience with foundations, earthwork, slopes, pavements, ground-improvement systems.
  • Strong written/verbal communication; able to coordinate with project team and clients.
  • Willingness to travel to project locations and work outdoors at construction sites.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to lift 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate subsurface investigations with project managers.
  • Lead field investigations, classify samples, and prepare boring logs.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing for soils/rocks and interpret data.
  • Perform geotechnical calculations for foundations, slopes, and pavements.
  • Develop geotechnical reports and practical recommendations.
  • Support construction-phase services and field coordination.
  • Review field/test reports for accuracy and quality.
  • Provide technical guidance to field staff and junior engineers.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, drillers, and project team members.
