Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt is seeking an entry-level geotechnical engineer or geologist to support our geotechnical and construction materials testing practice in our Lynchburg office. The role offers hands-on subsurface investigations, laboratory testing, and exposure to diverse projects in Virginia.

You will work with experienced engineers, geologists, and field staff, with opportunities for growth toward licensure and professional development in geotechnical engineering or geology.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, or geology.
  • 0-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training designation or eligibility.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites; some out-of-town work required.
  • Ability to prepare organized, accurate technical reports.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct subsurface investigations in the field with the drill team; prepare field logs and collect groundwater measurements.
  • Conduct laboratory soils testing.
  • Assist with geotechnical calculations and evaluations for foundations, earthwork, and pavement systems.
  • Prepare draft geotechnical reports under supervision.
  • Perform construction materials testing and observation.
  • Evaluate subgrades and foundation conditions during construction.
  • Review testing results for accuracy and project compliance.
  • Prepare daily field reports and construction observation documentation.
  • Communicate findings to project managers and contractors.
