Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt is seeking an entry-level geotechnical engineer or geologist to support its geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing practice in our Lynchburg office. This position blends field investigations, laboratory testing, and reporting to build practical experience for licensure.

You will collaborate with experienced engineers, geologists, and field staff on a range of projects, travel to site locations, and gain hands-on expertise in subsurface exploration, testing,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geological engineering or geology.
  • 0–3 years of relevant experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training designation or eligibility to obtain it.
  • Interest in pursuing professional licensure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare organized, professional technical reports.
  • Willingness to perform field and office assignments.
  • Travel to project sites and valid driver’s license.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and work overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct subsurface investigations in the field with the drill team and log soils and cores.
  • Perform laboratory soils testing and assist with geotechnical calculations.
  • Evaluate foundations, earthwork, retaining walls, and pavement systems.
  • Prepare draft geotechnical reports under guidance of senior staff.
  • Perform construction materials testing and observation of soils and aggregates.
  • Review field and laboratory results for accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare daily field reports and construction observation documentation.
  • Communicate findings to project managers and contractors.
