Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt seeks a geotechnical project engineer or project geologist with 4–6 years of relevant experience to support our geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing practice in the Lynchburg area. The position emphasizes technical execution and coordination with experienced teams.

The selected candidate will engage in subsurface investigations, report writing, and field/ lab coordination, with a clear path toward project management as expertise and leadership grow.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or geological engineering, geology, or related field.
  • Four to six years of progressively responsible geotechnical experience.
  • PE or PG licensure or eligible; PE licensure within ~12 months encouraged.
  • Experience planning or performing subsurface investigations and coordinating tests.
  • Experience interpreting field/lab data and developing soil/rock parameters.
  • Ability to prepare organized, professional technical reports under supervision.
  • Experience with foundations, settlement, earthwork, slopes, pavements or ground-improvement systems.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate subsurface investigations with project managers.
  • Lead field investigations; classify soils/cores and collect groundwater data.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing for soil/rock samples and interpret results.
  • Perform geotechnical calculations for foundations, earthwork, stability and pavements.
  • Develop geotechnical reports with practical recommendations.
  • Support construction-phase services and field coordination.
  • Review field/test reports for accuracy and consistency with requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance to field staff and review their work.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, drillers, and project team members.
  • Assist with proposals, scope development, scheduling, and budgeting.
