Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt is seeking a geotechnical project engineer/geologist with 4–6 years of experience to support our growing practice in the Lynchburg area. You will perform subsurface investigations, prepare technical reports, and coordinate field and lab activities with a team of engineers and technicians.

The role emphasizes technical execution and project coordination with a clear path toward project leadership as expertise develops. Travel to project sites may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, geology, or a closely related field.
• Four to six years of progressively responsible geotechnical engineering or engineering geology experience.
• Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist licensure. PE licensure within ~12 months strongly considered.
• Experience planning or performing subsurface investigations, describing soil and rock conditions, and coordinating field and laboratory testing.
• Experience interpreting field and laboratory data and assisting with soil/rock parameter development for engineering evaluation.
• Ability to coordinate project activities, communicate with clients, contractors, drillers, technicians, and other project personnel, and manage multiple assignments.

Responsibilities

• Plan and coordinate subsurface investigations with project managers; review plans and develop boring locations.
• Lead field investigations; classify soil/rock core samples; collect groundwater readings; log borings.
• Coordinate laboratory testing for soil/rock samples and interpret data.
• Perform geotechnical calculations on foundations, earthwork, slopes, and pavements.
• Develop practical recommendations and prepare geotechnical reports.
• Support construction-phase services by coordinating field technicians.
