Hurt & Proffitt in Lynchburg, VA is seeking an entry-level Staff Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist to support field and laboratory testing, subsurface investigations, and geotechnical evaluations for a range of projects. You will grow toward licensure with mentorship from experienced staff.

The role combines fieldwork with office analysis, reports, and client communication, offering hands-on project exposure and opportunities for advancement in a 100% employee-owned firm.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, or geology.
  • A minimum of 0-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training designation or effort to obtain it within a reasonable period after employment.
  • Interest in pursuing professional licensure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare organized, accurate, and professional technical reports.
  • Willingness to perform both field and office assignments.
  • Ability to travel to project sites; some out-of-town work required.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing with driving experience.
  • Willingness to lift and carry field-testing equipment up to ~50 pounds.
  • Willingness to work overtime as schedules require.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct subsurface investigations in the field alongside the drill team, log soils and collect groundwater data.
  • Conduct laboratory soils testing.
  • Assist with geotechnical calculations for foundations, earthwork, retaining walls, and pavement systems.
  • Prepare draft geotechnical engineering reports under guidance.
  • Perform construction materials testing and observation of soils, aggregates, concrete and related materials.
  • Evaluate subgrades, footings, and foundations during construction.
  • Review lab/field results for accuracy and compliance with requirements.
  • Prepare daily field reports and field observation documentation.
  • Communicate findings to project managers and contractors, support safety and quality.
  • Support company commitments to safety, responsive service, practical solutions.
