Job summary

Samsara in Austin, TX is hiring a Firmware Engineer to build software for millions of devices, from sensor platforms to gateways. You’ll bring up new boards, write low-level drivers, and collaborate with hardware, cloud, and QA teams to deliver reliable, energy-efficient deployments.

You’ll work with C, RTOS, and embedded Linux on constrained hardware, shaping designs from prototype to production while maintaining a high bar for performance, safety, and scale across our global operations.

Qualifications

• 2+ years building firmware for resource-constrained systems.
• Fluency in C.
• Solid bare-metal and RTOS experience - Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent.
• You have helped bring up new boards.
• Fluency in the low-level interfaces - SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, ADC.
• Real bench instincts with oscilloscopes, analyzers, RF tools.
• Cross-team scope across hardware, firmware, cloud and QA.
• Cross-layer judgment from driver to user experience.
• You write design docs, reviews, and post-mortems that others can act on.
• You ship fast without shipping poorly, with automated testing and maintainable code.
• You use AI smartly as part of daily workflow.

Responsibilities

• Shape the hardware, not just the code that runs on it.
• Be the first person to make a new board do anything at all.
• Build the layers everything else depends on (drivers, bootloaders, firmware updates).
• Chase every microamp by designing energy-efficient firmware and hardware management.
• Work with product, full-stack, mobile and QA to ensure data lands intact for dispatchers and technicians.
• Raise the bar for the engineers around you with reviews, design decisions and fast iteration.
