Job summary

EPM Scientific in Cambridge, MA seeks a Senior Instrumentation & Calibration Engineer / Field Service Engineer to own and troubleshoot analytical platforms in a regulated R&D environment. You’ll perform IQ/OQ/PQ, calibrations, and lead maintenance while advising on reliability and lifecycle decisions.

You’ll support LC/GC/HPLC systems from major vendors, train colleagues, and coordinate on-site service with scientists and vendors to ensure instrument readiness and compliant records.

Qualifications

• Hands-on chromatography experience is essential.

Job description

A leading global services partner is hiring a Senior Instrumentation & Calibration Engineer / Field Service Engineer to support a high-profile Lifesciences R&D client site in Cambridge, MA. You'll be the technical authority on a large portfolio of analytical instrumentation.

This is a hands-on role with genuine ownership: you'll troubleshoot complex platforms, lead qualification and calibration programmes, and advise on reliability, replacement, and lifecycle strategy.

What you'll be doing

• Advanced scheduled and unscheduled troubleshooting, service, and repair on analytical instrumentation used in pharmaceutical R&D
• Supporting chromatography platforms across Agilent, Waters, and Thermo Scientific product lines (HPLC/UPLC, GC, LC-MS and related systems)
• Performing instrument qualifications (IQ/OQ/PQ), calibrations, and complex analytical service procedures
• Developing service and calibration methods, procedures, and documentation
• Monitoring instrument and spare part reliability; recommending alternative service routes, suppliers, and parts
• Advising the client and internal management on platform reliability and replacement using LCAM and RCM principles
• Helping schedule and guide a team of technicians covering installation, calibration, repair, and preventive maintenance
• Reinstalling, testing, evaluating, and returning instruments to service post-repair
• Maintaining accurate records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs in line with GxP-aligned procedures
• Liaising with client staff and third-party vendors on repairs, service agreements, and equipment operation
• Delivering technical training and mentoring to colleagues on specialist instrumentation and techniques

What we’re looking for

• Hands-on chromatography experience is essential - this is the core of the role
• Experience servicing, calibrating, qualifying, or troubleshooting instrumentation from at least one of Waters, Thermo Fisher, or Agilent
• A background in instrumentation and control, field service, metrology, or laboratory equipment maintenance - typically 5+ years, though we're open to strong candidates with a slightly different mix
• Bachelor's degree, ideally in a scientific or technical discipline - equivalent hands‑on experience will be considered
• Exposure to pharmaceutical, biotech, CRO, or regulated laboratory environments is a strong advantage
• Familiarity with preparing chemical standards (weighing, pipetting, dilution, concentration verification) is useful but can be trained
• Comfortable working independently onsite, communicating directly with scientists and vendors
