Job summary

Coinbase, Inc. is seeking a founding engineer for Compliance automation to work inside the Office of the CTO.

You will identify high-value automation opportunities across transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and exam readiness, building and prototyping on Coinbase's AI platform. You will embed with Compliance leadership, translate complex regulatory workflows into engineering tasks, and drive adoption of AI tooling with a focus on auditable, human-in-the-loop outputs that meet regulatory

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering in ambiguous, stakeholder-heavy environments.
• Hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications with prompt engineering.
• Ability to embed with non-technical domain experts and translate workflows to engineering tasks.
• Familiarity with compliance and regulatory systems concepts: transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory filing workflows.
• Familiarity with multi-agent orchestration, including handoffs, escalation, and auditability.
• Experience in Forward Deployed Engineering or embedded technical advisory in finance/compliance.
• Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to improve workflow efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Embed with Compliance leadership to surface automation opportunities with the greatest business leverage.
• Prototype quickly using Coinbase's AI platform as the baseline foundation.
• Own the Compliance automation roadmap in partnership with leadership, translating regulatory workflows into engineering requirements.
• Define the build-vs-buy strategy for Compliance tooling and determine what to build internally, adopt, procure, or retire.
• Ensure every automated output is traceable, auditable, and defensible to regulators with Gates, evidence retention, and human-in-the-loop controls.
• Drive adoption through brown-bags, prototype walkthroughs, and feedback loops.
