Job summary

Travelers is seeking a Counsel for Bond & Specialty Insurance (BSI) claims. The role involves analyzing and resolving claims under supervision, advising underwriting, and coordinating with outside counsel. Requires JD, bar licensure, and 1–5 years of relevant experience.

Expect involvement in mediations, conferences, and depositions, with travel as needed. The position emphasizes collaboration, analytic reporting, and risk mitigation for a broad range of claims.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree required.
• Juris Doctorate required.
• Licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where you will be working.

Responsibilities

• Follow operational policies to analyze, investigate, and resolve BSI claims with supervision from claims management.
• Prepare and present reports reflecting loss development, financial exposure, reserve adjustments, coverage issues, and strategies.
• Retain, monitor, and manage outside counsel using litigation management plans and budgets.
• Communicate with underwriting on significant claim exposures.
• Travel to mediations, settlements, conferences, field visits, trials and depositions.
• Identify recovery opportunities and coordinate with Recovery Management Unit and Claims.
• Refine policy interpretation/coverage analysis and draft coverage opinions with case law.
• Negotiate settlements, review releases and confidentiality provisions.
• Support underwriting marketing efforts and participate in broker visits and risk seminars; author customer-focused white papers.
• Monitor market conditions, conduct research, and draft reference materials for claim and underwriting teams.
