Job summary

Indian Health Service is seeking a Medical Technician (Laboratory Support) to perform complex lab testing across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, serology, and blood banking. You will collect specimens, process them in LIS, and ensure results are accurate and properly documented.

You will evaluate results, troubleshoot issues, maintain instruments, and support quality Assurance and accreditation efforts in compliance with CAP/CLIA standards. A federal background check is required.

Qualifications

• Six months of general experience.
• Six months of specialized experience performing technical medical laboratory support work (tests and reports).
• Education options include an associate degree with certified lab assistant training or equivalent combinations.
• GS-04/GS-05/GS-07 progression includes specific education and experience requirements.
• Not all locations have promotion potential; education substitutions allowed for higher grades.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory testing across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and blood banking.
• Evaluate test results, recognize abnormal findings, and troubleshoot to ensure accuracy.
• Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment; prepare reagents and culture media; monitor QC.
• Collect and process patient specimens; accession and track in lab information systems; prepare specimens for referral testing.
• Validate and document laboratory results; communicate findings to healthcare providers; support quality assurance and accreditation per CAP/CLIA.

Education

Associate degree with one year certified laboratory assistant program training

One year of chemistry and/or biological sciences coursework + clinical laboratory training

Two years of chemistry/biological sciences studies

Combination of education and experience

Bachelor’s degree with related subject hours (≥24 semester hours)
