Job summary

Indian Health Service is seeking a Medical Technician (Laboratory Support) to provide clinical laboratory testing across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis and more. You’ll collect specimens, ensure specimen integrity, and document results to support patient care within a federal health program.

Qualifications

• Six months general experience in a relevant field.
• Six months specialized experience performing technical medical laboratory support work.
• Completion of an associate degree program including one year of training in a certified laboratory assistant program.
• One year of study with chemistry and/or biological sciences plus a full-time medical/clinical laboratory assistant training program.
• Two years of study with chemistry/biological sciences directly related to the position being filled.
• A combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory testing in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and blood banking.
• Evaluate test results, recognize normal vs abnormal findings, and troubleshoot or repeat procedures.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments; prepare reagents, stains, and culture media; monitor quality control.
• Collect and process patient specimens; evaluate specimen acceptability; accession and track in LIS; prepare for referral testing.
• Validate and document laboratory results; communicate results to healthcare providers; support quality assurance and compliance with CAP, CLIA, and safety rules.

Education

Associate degree in laboratory assistant program

Bachelor's degree in a related field

One year of study with chemistry and/or biological sciences plus a lab training program

Two years of study in chemistry and/or biological sciences related to the position
